Hi, folks,

you probably missed me already, but at the moment I have trouble putting out any COTD's on the weekends as they all seem to get crammed with other duties, so we will for the next few weeks be reduced to four or five cards a week. Sorry for that.

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Event, uncommon AU.
Plays on table. Any of your personnel aboard a ship he or she commanded or captained (as referenced in ship lore) raises SHIELDS +3 and WEAPONS +3. (Not cumulative)

This is cute. An upgraded Bynars Weapons Enhancement and a kind of Nutational shields, combined in one card. And there are quite a few ships this works on, and there are more that may get the benefit in future expansions:

A few people have of course argued that the Enterprise should also get the benefit. I disagree here. The purpose behind this card was, amongst others, to provide some extra play value to otherwise neglected cards and definitely NOT to make Picard and the Enterprise even more desirable.

But I think there are two ships that SHOULD get the benefit, although by strict rules interpretation, they are out of luck: The Khazara (Toreth) and the Haakona (potentially Taris). They both read "xxx's Warbird", which by the rules is not a valid indication of Command. I disagree here, as the spirit of the card is to add the bonus to any ship card that mentions its commanding officer. [BTW: The rule sheet explains that "Dathon, speaking first" is Tamarian for "He's the captain of the ship" and thus valid.]

Good choices for the log? Enterprise-C (Garrett is a great card and if you have attack authorization it might make a nice surprise attack), Sutherland (7/10/10 for two crew is good and Data is in most good Fed decks anyway), Decius (10/12/11, best attack force for Romulans and the only fast AU ship that gets the bonus), Tama (non-aligned and good, as is Dathon) and the Hegh'ta (better than the Pagh and 8/10/10 for one crew is even better than the Sutherland! Also the Pagh is a little dubious, too, as it says "under the command of" and not "commanded by", but I am nitpicking. Decipher should publish an official list here...)
