Wesley's STCCG card of the day #187

Hi, folks,

I had some access trouble yesterday, so no COTD then, but I am back... With the new top slot mission:

DIPLOMATIC CONFERENCE

Mission, Planet,AU rare
Span 4
60 points
Fed, Kli, Rom
One V.I.P from each of three affiliations + one non-aligned V.I.P.
"Parliament: Participate in historic interstellar conference at this neutral diplomatic site."
I have already seen several decks built around this card (with varying success). It really is an "all or nothing" card. Not only do you need four personnel from four different affiliations (thus requiring a 3-color deck), but you also must overcome any Dilemmas seeded here, a task at which the various V.I.P's will not excel.

Also, you will practically need to seed three outposts (possibly and best all three at the Diplomatic Conference), as a neutral outpost would require making three trips by ship to the conference location (can only be seeded at space locations). And remember, your V.I.P.'s can only cooperate here unless you have the appropriate treaty.

Personnel choices:

Non-aligned is quite easy. You will need all of them. All two. You cannot afford having just one and your choice is not that good. I'd prefer Maques for the higher Integrity (Firestorms). Neither is AU (icon), so no Cryosatellite, either.

Romulan: Your obvious choice should be Major Rakal. She is dual affiliation, allowing you to use her as what you need, AU for your Cryosatellite and she can ride your Fed ships even if you need her as a Rommie later. For the second slot, I'd recommend Sela or Pardek.

Klingon: They have more than enough V.I.P.'s, but the prime choice is Governor Worf (AU and SECURITY), followed by the Duras clan and Gowron. Pick any complement for our fave ridge-guy.

Federation: Apart from the Janus-headed Rakal, Sarek would probably be your best choice (Mindmeld, nice to have against the "need ... x2" Dilemmas). Beyond, you have to select between Tam Elbrun and Kareel Odan. Again, no AU so no Cryosatellite (except Rakal, natch).

General result: The mission is too hard for 60 points. You still have to solve a second mission and the skills needed don't really overlap (although you might try First Contact and Diplomacy mission when mostly Fed). Apart from the VIP's you at least need a Vekor and a Roga Danar for the Dilemmas (two more cards) and a Vulcan Mindmeld in hand to flexibly cope with some nasty Dilemmas. A theme deck card.

PS: Addendum to #186 (Mask of Korgano). Mentioned by Q (formerly DAnswerman and some others. I missed the Mask of Korgano + Devidian Foragers combo. But again, if I have no real AU to use the foragers on, I don't think the mask will help me much. Same goes for the combination of Mask + Fissure research. Rather have another real AU personnel. BTW: Q rated it 4.0, even below the average of the permanent raters :-)
