Wesley's STCCG card of the day #152

Hi, folks,

here's a card of which some people think it's great, others think it's crap:

RISHON UXBRIDGE

Event, common AU.
Plays atop any one event card in play. Protects the underlying event from Kevin Uxbridge. However, Kevin Uxbridge may remove (discard) Rishon. (not cumulative). AU Icon.
"In his grief, the Douwd Kevin Uxbridge re-created his dead wife, Rishon. As if she were real, he responded to her tendency to keep him calm at tense moments."
Let's analyze who is right:

1) The "crap" argument: Hey, why should I play this card instead of just another copy of the base event which would even help me get it out faster? This argument is actually valid and in many cases will hold well. However, there are a few exceptions, and that gets me to the other side:

2) The "not-so-crappy" arguments: First, there are a few vital cards (Red Alert) for which the above-mentioned argument does not hold, as you can't use two of them in a deck when playing by tournament rules.

Second, you might want to use a Rishon to protect a key event on the spaceline before nuking all others with a Kev Ux: Convergence.

Third, this also is a psychological card. Play Red Alert - get it Uxbridged, play another Red Alert - opponent will likely Uxbridge it again. However she might think twice before using up two Kevins on the same one Red Alert card.

3) The "forget that - it's still crappy" arguments: Playing a Rishon costs you a turn and turns are limited resources. This might just prove too much work just for a single event, especially as most of them can do their work quite quickly (Red Alert is futile as soon as you have played all your cards from your hand - you'll need to hoard cards to really use it again, so why should I protect it instead of just using it ?)

And another one: Mind that Kevin is an INTERRUPT! When your opponent tries to play a Rishon, interrupt that play and nuke the underlying event before Rishon hits the table! Result: Event discarded, Rishon will have to find another target (and will be in for a rules hassle if there are no more events to choose from...)

Also, why don't you just replace the Rishon with a Q2 giving you the additional advantage of nuking that Kevin instead of just avoiding him.

Net result: The crap side wins :-(
