Wesley's STCCG card of the day #112

Hi, folks,

this card has a little more to it than it first seems:

SUBSPACE SCHISM

Interrupt, uncommon.
Play within five seconds of either player's card draw. That player must dis- card that card and redraw.
"Solanagen-based aliens from another subspace domain accessed our space to abduct people for experiments."
Now this one requires some depth: A card that can be used on either player. So, let's first assume I use it on myself.

Approach #1: I draw a bad card and want to get rid of it. No problem, play Subspace Schism, discard, replace. But then, I could have drawn something useful instead of the Subspace Schism in first place. DOH. Not worth it

Approach #2: I want to play a deck with less than 30 draw deck cards. Here's a use. Subspace Schism is a neutral card I can well use to reduce my deck size if that's my aim. Remember, I can use it on itself! So this should not be dismissed, especially if I have lots of Bridge crew. Disadvantage: Cannot use it on the first seven cards, so any that come up early will hurt me. Still a possible strategy.

That's it for this side, try it the other way round. Now my OPPONENT is my target.

Approach #3: Deny her a good card. To do this I must know what she has just drawn. Several possibilities here:

3a: Play a Thought maker on her. Place a vital card on top of the deck (let's say her only Juggler), then lots of crap. Let her draw, Subspace Schism.
3b: Use Jaglom Shrek and a good memory. Alien probe works as well. 3c: Wait until she uses her Betazoid Gift Box. Definitely a good card drawn here (might be illegal, though.)

Approach #4: The double nasty shot. Situation: You have a nasty event card on the table. Opponent draws, smiles and throws a Kevin Uxbridge on your event (of course NOT waiting the five seconds!!!). Smile back, fire your Subspace Schism. TOO bad for her... (Make sure she really played the card she had just drawn. Many players will fall for this. Works great for Red Alerts, too.) Defense against this: ALWAYS wait 5 seconds after your card draw before playing a card...

The card adds some kind of Poker element to the game. It's really a bluffing card.
